As we progress further into the 21st century, climate change becomes an ever greater issue. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries’, technology has been implemented to try and prevent further damage such as the use of clean energy.  However, one way which is less often discussed is that of GIS technology.

GIS ‘was developed in 1963 and used by the Canadian government to map natural resources for a national land-use management program.’ Since then it has been used in many different sectors such as planning and utilities.

When it comes to the use of GIS and how it can help during the climate crisis, such as through rebuilding and disaster response. One recent example is that of the ‘Texas freeze’ of 2021. Using GIS, ’emergency crews in central Texas were able to quickly locate and repair frozen and burst pipes with precision imaging’. This shows that GIS can be used to assist in disasters and ensure that infrastructure can be rebuilt as quick as possible as well as assessing terrain to calculate the frequency of how likely an area is to suffer from extreme weather such as flooding or droughts.
